Frosts cause damage to artichokes throughout Spain
In the case of the region of Murcia, sources of the Ministry of Agriculture confirm damages worth more than 3.7 million euros and more than 6,500 hectares of land affected, according to the newspaper La Opinión de Murcia.
Within the region, the most affected municipalities are Lorca, with 3,800 hectares damaged and a loss of 1.2 million euros; Totana, with 1,100 hectares damaged; Fuente Alamo with 560 and Alhama with 498. Although the most affected crop has been the artichoke, there have also been considerable damage in the cultivation of green beans, lettuce and some citrus, such as oranges, lemons or mandarins.
Damage produces losses of more than 40% of artichokes
According to Agroinformación.com, ASAJA Murcia warns that the damage caused by these frosts will cause losses of more than 40% of artichokes, lettuces and beans.
The producers regret that this adverse climatic situation has arrived at one of the worst moments of the harvest, just when the artichokes were reaching their best selling price, between 1.70 and 2 euros a kilo. Now, according to Diariolainformación.com, the worst affected will not exceed 60 o 70 cents.
The case of the Valencian Community
In the Valencian Community the most affected regions are Camp de Túria and Canal de Navarrés where, according to the daily Levante, there have been isolated damage in crops such as artichokes and citrus.
